Thomas Franklin Wagoner

A celebration of his life with Military Honors, will be held at Edgewood Baptist Church in Candler

NC, at 2:00 p.m., on Jan. 27th, 2024. Pastor Keith Lindsay will preside over the service.

Tom Wagoner- 80, passed away peacefully at his home, with his family at his side, on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Gifts/Flowers are not required. Your presence would be most appreciated. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn F. Wagoner, and Ms. Martha Smith Wagoner,

his first-born son Thomas F. Wagoner, his brother Peter M. Wagoner, and sister Sam A. Wagoner.

He is survived by his sister Linda Burton, son Thomas D. Wagoner, daughters Angie E. Sims, and

Aaron R. Wagoner, nephew Bradley Wagoner and grandchildren Nick, Mary, Dylan, Dalton, Gavin, Reed. Stepchildren Slater, RD, April and their children, Dani, Haley, Maisie, Brooks, Sully, Harrison, and Harlan.

Tom was employed by the Enka Polyester Plant for several years during the 1960s, before becoming a U.S. Army Helicopter Pilot. He served in the Army for 27 dedicated years before honorably exiting the service in 1995. After his service in the Army, he continued working as a Helicopter Instructor Pilot as an aircraft simulator operator at Ft. Bragg N.C. before retiring to Candler N.C. During his time in the Army, he served in Viet Nam, Hawaii, Ft. Bragg, Korea, Panama, and Germany. He accomplished most of his Army Pilot training in Ft. Rucker Ala. His combat tours included service in Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. Tom was qualified on the OH-6 Little Bird, UH-1 Huey, UH-60 Black Hawk and C-12 fixed wing aircraft. He served as a U.S. Army Air Calvary Officer for over 15 years. His SCOUT missions, while flying the OH-6 Little Bird during Viet Nam would shape and define his life in Army Aviation, as well as his life after the Army.

His U.S. Army Awards and Medals include: The U.S. Army Master Aviator Badge, Legion of Merit,

Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medals (3), Air Medals (15), Army Commendation Medals (3), 

Army Achievement Medals (3), Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Combat

Service, Humanitarian Service, Overseas Service.

He encouraged patience, he loved his family so much and would often say, “Keep working on Love.”

Tom was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, Candler NC 28715.

We would like to thank Four Season's Hospice for the great care they gave our father. A very special thanks to caregivers- Wendy, Nina, Julie, and Shirley.

Tom’s end-of-life care has been entrusted to Asheville Area Alternative. Obituary is posted on “Legacy”

with the help of Asheville Area Alternative. Tom’s Ashes will be spread later, during a private ceremony.
