Thomas Lance Obituary

Thomas W. Lance, a lifelong resident of Candler, North Carolina, died April 12, 2026, at the age of 87.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Garrett “Dock” Lance and Hazel Nell Parker Lance, and brother, James Aaron “Whitey” Lance.

Tom, also known as Dad, Paw, and Griz, served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Armored Division – “Hell on Wheels.” He then worked for Southern Bell, retiring from BellSouth after 35 years of diligent service.  He was a member of the Hominy Valley Wildlife Club and Hominy Masonic Lodge #491.

Dad lived life to the fullest, enjoying time on his boat at Fontana or on his “public” deck overlooking the lake.  He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and camping with special friends and family in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains where he often said, “It don’t get any better than this.”

He is survived by his children, Leslie Hull-Ryde, Tracy McGaha and Thomas W. “Chip” Lance II; four grandchildren, Brittany McGaha Arneson, Jay McGaha, DJ Hull-Ryde, and Reagan Lance; two great grandchildren, Kyson Arneson and Evie McGaha; and his girlfriend, Pat Smith, who loved and spoiled him.

The family is incredibly grateful to the Charles George VA Medical Center and the army of doctors, nurses, and caregivers throughout the complex and at Valor Hospice, known as “Team Tom,” who blessed Paw with exceptional care, love and support for many years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to either Baptist Missions to Forgotten Peoples (in memory of Tom Lance, PO Box 219 Kernersville, NC 27285), Valor Hospice (Charles George VA Hospital with Valor Hospice in the memo line, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805), or Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina (Shriners Children’s Greenville, Office of Philanthropy 950 West Faris Rd, Greenville, SC 29605).

Tom’s family will receive friends and family to honor his journey, which was “one for the history books” on Monday, April 27, from 6 – 8 p.m., at New Hope Baptist Church, 14 Joy Lane, Candler, NC 28715.
