Steven Paul Welch, 72, of Asheville, NC, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2025.
Steve was born on February 5, 1953 in Reading, Massachusetts to the late, Donald E. Welch and Bettina T. Welch. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Dolan and brother, John Welch.
Steve lived a full and vibrant life. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1971 and proudly served until his retirement in Charleston, SC in 1993. During times he wasn't underway, he found great joy in boating along the Atlantic coastline. Following his military career, he explored running a hospitality business in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Steve had many interests, including history, politics, and cooking. His venison chili recipe, along with the tales from his days as a sailor, are cherished family heirlooms. He loved to laugh, was an expert joke teller from the cheesy dad-jokes to those which cannot be printed here, a devoted Boston Red Sox fan, and never missed a chance to see a Rolling Stones concert. He will be dearly missed.
Surviving Steve is his daughter, Kristin Watson (Thomas) of Asheville, NC; sisters, Donna Campbell (Kenneth) of Melrose, MA, Bettina “Betsy” Welch of Peabody, MA, Lisa Annino (Keith) of Billerica, MA; brothers, Charles Welch (Deborah) of Ladson, SC, Donald Welch (Paula) of Malden, MA, Peter Welch from Attleboro, MA; brother-in-law, Tim Dolan; grandchild, Ian McBee; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the service providers and care givers at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
