Russell Broughton Scruggs, 80, of Asheville passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at his home with his children by his side. Born June 22, 1942 in Shelby, NC, he was a son of the late Baxter and Bertha Scruggs. He received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from North Carolina State University. For almost 20 years, he owned and operated Timberline Lumber Company. Music was a passion of his, especially Swing Jazz, and Classical Guitar. In addition, he enjoyed poetry, the study of history and philosophy. He was an avid environmentalist and was extremely inspired by the works of Albert Schweitzer, Mark Twain, Benjamin Franklin, Winston Churchill and H.D. Thoreau. Surviving are his children, Mark Scruggs and spouse, Shelley, of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Eva des Francs and spouse, Edouard, of Charleston, SC; Siblings, Jerry Scruggs, Danny Scruggs and his spouse, Wanda, all of Shelby, NC; grandchildren, Chelsea Hammond, Emily Scruggs, Abigail Scruggs, and Kestrel Allawos. A private graveside service will be held for the family on Saturday, August 13, 2022 and a celebration of Life will be scheduled in the near future to be publicly announced in the Asheville area for his many friends and relations.
