Roger Dale McKinney, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, June 6th, 2022, at the age of 71. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Rose Mary McKinney, his daughter, Allison Maxwell and her husband, Joey, and granddaughter, Delaney Maxwell; sisters: Wanda (Tom) Clark, Pat (Ken) Chandler, and Denise (Eddie) Miller; brothers: David (Ceceale) McKinney, Jeff (Pam) McKinney, and Keith McKinney; as well as many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Adam T.C McKinney; and his mother, Juanita “Butch” McKinney.
Roger was born on April 9,1951, in Marion, NC, and later moved to the Asheville area. A graduate of Erwin High School, he married his sweetheart Rose in June of 1972, and they welcomed their daughter in October of 1981. Roger was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was active in sports, playing football and softball, as well as acting as a referee and umpire in later years, calling basketball, softball and volleyball games. He also served as a volleyball booking agent for the WNC area and worked as a produce manager for several area grocery stores.
Roger loved music and had a beautiful singing voice, was an avid fisherman, and loved to tell jokes and riddles. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and will be remembered fondly for his generosity, warm smile, and playful nature.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 25th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the Land of Sky Regional Council, 339 New Leicester Hwy, Asheville. A drop-in, potluck food and fellowship will follow directly after the service from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
