Robert James Hansen, age 93, of Andrews, NC, died peacefully on March 22, 2025.
Born on July 1, 1931, in Chicago, IL, Robert was baptized into Christ’s death and resurrection at St. Andrews English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood.
Robert developed the heart of a helper early in life. After losing his father, Elmer, at just one year old and growing up during the Great Depression, he learned the value of hard work and perseverance. He began working young—first at the flagship Marshall Field & Co. on State Street, then in roles ranging from construction to ductwork installation—all to help support his education.
He earned a Bachelor of Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Master of Public Administration from Golden Gate University.
In 1952, Robert married Charlotte Claire Covington, also of Chicago. Charlotte was a Registered Nurse, and together they were blessed with one child, Dr. Hunter James Hansen, now of Indian Land, SC.
The family later relocated to Tampa, FL, to better support Charlotte’s health. There, Robert served for over two decades in accounting and fiscal management for what became the nation’s seventh-largest school district. He was proud to earn the designation of Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM).
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charlotte; his sister, Arlene Carolyn Hansen Oates Decker; his parents, Ellen Olive Peterson Hansen and Elmer James Hansen; and his granddaughter, Ashley Rose Hansen.
As a young man, Robert played the snare drum with the Norwood Park Imperials Drum and Bugle Corps in Chicago. Standing at 6'5", he carried the affectionate nickname "Shorty." His time with the Corps left him with a lifetime of stories and fond memories he loved to share.
In retirement, he formed a special bond with his grandson, Matthew, with whom he shared a birthday. It was during these years that he gained another nickname—“Gramps.”
Robert is survived by his son, Dr. Hunter James Hansen; his former daughter-in-law and devoted caregiver, Chris Hansen; his grandson, the Rev. Matthew James Hansen; and his sister-in-law, Olivia Covington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sonshine Backpack Ministry of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 100 St. Johns Church Rd, Concord, NC, or to Lutheran Services Carolinas.
Robert will be laid to rest beside his wife, Charlotte, near his parents at Acacia Park Cemetery in Chicago. A memorial service in Chicago will be held at a later date.
He will be remembered for his gentleness, his unwavering love for his family, and the enduring work ethic of the Greatest Generation.
