Penny Yeargin passed away peacefully at Mission Hospital on October 11, 2024, after an exacerbation of COPD. Penelope Jane Yeargin was born July 9, 1947 to Charles and Jean Yeargin, in Greenville, SC. Her father introduced her to the family dog the day she was born, and she claims the dog’s face was the first thing she ever saw. Penny began her ‘life of crime’ terrorizing the nuns at the boarding school and smoking cigarettes out back. She attended Stephens College in Columbia MO, which claims to be one of the pet friendliest campuses in the country. A theme is emerging- animals. Penny excelled in both her chosen fields: social work and nursing. Her careers took her from SC to GA to NM to MD and finally to Asheville, NC where she worked at Mission hospital for over 20 years on the Ortho wing. Whenever she moved to a new town, her first stop was always the veterinarian/animal shelter. She often had more than half a dozen rescued pets under her care. Penny will be greatly missed for her sense of humor and loyal friendship. Donations in her memory can be sent to:
ASPCA
Grace Covenant
Presbyterian Church Asheville, NC
The American Red Cross
