Peggy Denise “Shorty” Elkin

Peggy Denise “Shorty” Elkin, 69, of Asheville, NC passed away on Friday, January 9, 2026 at the Keever Solace Center, Asheville, NC. Born April 3, 1956 in Asheville, NC, she was a daughter of the late Charles Albert Cauble and Poconna Stewart Matthews.

She was a graduate of Erwin High School and was employed for 35 years with Appalachian Technology. She was a member of the Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does for 47 years and she enjoyed doing crafts.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her step-dad, Bob Matthews and her niece, Malerie Crisp. Surviving are her spouse of 46 years, John Wesley Elkin III; children, Angie and son-in-law Mark Parton, Brandon Elkin, and Brittney Elkin all of Asheville, NC; siblings, Rusty Cauble and his spouse, Debbie, of Inman, SC, and Robin Bell and her spouse, Tommy, of Arden, NC; grandchildren, Markus, Joshua, Tykeem, Eathan, and Graci; four nieces; a nephew; many cousins and her bestie, Francis Johnston.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Asbury Methodist Church, 171 Beaverdam Road, Asheville, NC 28804 with the family receiving friends an hour prior. In lieu of flowers, donation may be payable to: Grand Lodge BPO Does-memo line Dogs for Better Lives donation in memory of Denise Elkin. Denise was a kind and loving person who always made people laugh. Family meant everything to her. She is now in the arms of her Lord. The family would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time.
