Patricia Skinner Obituary

Patricia Davisson Skinner, known as Mawdy to her granddaughters and Pati to her friends, 92, passed peacefully at The Laurels of Summit Ridge on May 1, 2021 following a 5 year journey with breast cancer and a short period of declining health. Pati was born January 26, 1929 in Columbus, Ohio, graduating from Ohio State University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Commercial Art. In 1951 she married Lawrence M. Skinner and they relocated to North Carolina in 1954. They were married until his death in 1976. Pati received a Masters in Early Childhood Education from Western Carolina University in 1975. She taught kindergarten in the Buncombe County Schools at Bell Elementary and Emma Elementary while raising her daughter as a single mother after Larry's death. Friends will remember her for her love of photos and knitting. Although she never would use a computer, she printed out her own photos and sent them to friends and relatives regularly. For years she knitted blankets, sweaters, and hats for family members. Most recently she knitted many dishrags and handed them out to family and friends. She was a longtime member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and was a member of the choir for many years. In 1999, she started caring for her granddaughters 4 days a week and enjoyed that for 10 years. Pati is survived by her daughter Nancy Adams, son-in-law John Adams, and granddaughters Rachel and Sarah, who were the joy of her life. In addition she is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and their spouses and families in Ohio, Michigan, and Florida. The family wishes to thank Dr. William Snoddy who was her family doctor for many years, Care Partners Hospice, and Dr. Nathan Williams of New Horizons Women's Cancer Care and his staff. Graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 13 at 2 pm at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard. All are invited with masks and following Covid protocols. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to North Asheville Preschool, 171 Beaverdam Road, Asheville, NC 28804 or Ballet Conservatory of Asheville, 6 E Chestnut Street, Asheville, NC 28801, two places that mean a lot to her granddaughters, to be used for scholarship funds for students in need.
