Marion LaDonne Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 10, 2025 in Asheville, North Carolina after a lengthy battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
She was born on December 9, 1947 in Pomona/Guilford County to Joseph Gilbert Sides and Ernestine Minor Sides. The fifth of fourteen children, in her formative years she was instrumental in the care of her younger siblings.
Her love of great music spanned many genres, and she often attended the symphony in her later years. She loved Christmas, antique shops, and was an avid collector of angel figurines. She supported local charities and those most in need. A life-long learner, she also enjoyed beach trips with extended family members. She met life’s adversities head-on, always with a determined spirit and quiet strength. Authentic and eclectic, she believed most in marching to the beat of her own drum. She was one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She is survived by her three children; Shannon Smith (Rachel) of Odessa FL, Shawn Winebrenner (Christopher) of Asheville NC, and Darian Smith of AZ.; grandchildren Khira, Symone, Jonah, Courtney, Rain, Shanyn, Gavin, and great-grandchildren, Ava, Amir, and Asiah.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, and brothers Howard Sides and Kerry Sides.
Family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life and not the sadness of her passing. In her honor, please consider supporting the research of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
