In Loving Memory of Marian Swilling Piercy
Our beloved mother, Marian Swilling Piercy, was called home to the Kingdom of God, surrounded by angels, on June 9, 2025. She was born on November 22, 1931, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Glenn Moss Swilling and Alice Bell Swilling.
On April 17, 1953, she married the love of her life, Herbert H. Piercy, at Beaverdam Baptist Church. Herbert preceded her in death in 1977. Together, they raised four children. Their son, Jonathan Piercy, passed away in 2005.
Marian was the cherished sister of three brothers—Buster, Max, and Harry Swilling—all of whom predeceased her. As the only daughter, she was adored and treated like a princess, forming a deep and lasting bond with each of them. She remained close to them all throughout life and loved them dearly.
She is lovingly survived by her children: Sheri Piercy Smith (Van), Doug Piercy (Cindy), and Bruce Piercy (Claire). Affectionately known as “Mimi,” she leaves behind six beloved grandchildren: Jennifer (Chad), Andrea, Douglas (Calle), Rob (Samantha), Jay (Morgan), and Aleah. She also leaves eight adored great-grandchildren: Katy, Denver, Boone, Dylan, Devyn, Drew, Max, and Jack—who lovingly said, “Mimi was one of the coolest grandmas to ever live.” She also had many nieces and nephews who she held dearly in her heart.
Marian was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and Blanton’s Business College. A devoted professional and community member, she was active in Junior Achievement, served as President of the Asheville Women’s Business and Professional Club, was a member of the Asheville Board of Realtors for 20 years, and retired from Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo) after a fulfilling career.
Our mother was truly a social butterfly—vibrant, loving, full of life and laughter. She brought warmth and joy to everyone and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Marian had a special gift for making everyone feel important and cherished.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at The Laurels of Greentree Ridge for the care they provided for our mother. Also, the John F. Keever Solace Center staff for their compassion, kindness, comfort, dignity and grace they showed for our mother and the entire family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to John F. Keever, Jr. Care Partners Hospice & Palliative Care Solace Center, PO Box 5779, Asheville, NC 28813 or a charity of your choice in Marian’s memory.
The Graveside Service will take place this Saturday, June 14, 2025 @ 2:00 pm at the Lewis Memorial Park in Beaverdam, North Asheville. Arrangements are being handled by Asheville Area Alternative Funeral Services.
To honor her wishes, please wear colorful attire as we celebrate her life in a joyful, uplifting way, just as she would have wanted.
In this gathering of family and friends, let us share our favorite stories of our mother, Marian, remembering her kindness, her laughter, and the countless ways she touched our lives.
