Margaret (Peggy) Grimes Obituary

Margaret (Peggy) Morrison Grimes, 83, of Weaverville, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 11th at the Solace Center with her family and dog, Gretl, by her side. Peggy was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Emmor and Dorothy (Cain) Morrison. She graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas and attended MacMurray College for Women in Jacksonville, Illinois. In 1959 she married the love of her life, Benjamin Lyman Grimes, III. Shortly after the wedding, Ben and Peggy moved from Dallas, Texas to Norman, Oklahoma where Ben served in the United States Public Health Service. After two years of public service, Ben took a job with Dow Chemical while Peggy was busy as a homemaker and mother of three. Ben’s career took them to New Jersey, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Missouri, and Ontario Canada before they finally retired and settled in Weaverville. Peggy enjoyed serving her community. While living in Georgetown, Texas, she joined the local political women’s group and was invited to the board of directors, serving as secretary. Her involvement in the committee created the opportunity to serve on the Williamson County Grand Jury. And, by invitation, a Southwestern University Professor asked for her help to install a “Court Watch” program to monitor the local “Good Ole Boy” judges who appeared to be favoring male dominance in the court cases. Peggy loved her family deeply. A former tennis and golf player, she was a gifted oil painter and loved reading and playing bridge. Recently, she spent many hours playing board games with her family, walking her dog, Gretl, laughing at her cat, Hansel, and solving challenging crossword puzzles. Peggy’s beloved Ben preceded her in death. She is survived by her children: daughters Betsy Schieber (Tom) of Asheville and Barbara Nordlund (Kevin) of Tampa, FL, and son Robert Grimes of Asheville; grandchildren Mary Cooper (Matt), Cliff Newton, Kristi Krason (Aaron), and Rusty Nordlund; and great-grandchildren Morgan Cooper, twins Logan and Reagan Cooper, and Chase Krason, due in November. Peggy Grimes’ service: Day / Date: Sunday; October 24, 2021 Time: 3:00pm Location: Grace Episcopal Church 871 Merrimon Avenue Asheville, NC. 28804
