Lewis Honeywell Merrill, 96, of Asheville peacefully passed away December 24th at his home in Montford. Mr. Merrill was born in Delhi, NY to the late Pierre B. and Marguerite H. Merrill. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Helen Petersen Merrill in 2016, and his sister, Sally M. Shotwell in 1988. Surviving are his son, Scott P. Merrill and his husband, Brian B. May of Asheville; brother-in-law, R. Allen Shotwell of Leesburg, FL; niece, Elizabeth S. Bowman and her husband, David Bowman of Auburn, NY; and cousin, Peter G. Honeywell of Syracuse, NY. Mr. Merrill was an 86-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi. He graduated from Delaware Academy Delhi in 1942 and Ohio State University 1950 with a degree in Horticulture. Mr. Merrill served in the USAAF, stationed in the Aleutians, leaving as Sargent. He was employed for 50 years in the horticulture field in Utica, NY, Stamford and Darien, CT. During this time, he and Helen married, settling in New Canaan, CT, where he created and maintained an award-winning flower garden over 40 years. They retired in 1998 to Asheville to be near their son. Mr. Merrill had a passion for gardening, architecture, musical theatre, and most of all railroads and trains as he enjoyed traveling extensively by rail. Mr. Merrill’s unique humor and wit will be missed. The family is forever grateful to the dedicated staff at CarePartners Hospice for their compassion and guidance. There will be no services. Ashes will be interred in Delhi. Mr. Merrill asked, In lieu of flowers, friends plant a tree or shrub in memory.
