Lawrence Thomas Host lived a blessed life of 88 years passed away quietly at home on
Monday, July 12, 2021. Born May 22, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio to Wilbur and Florence Hoshstrasser
(nee McGraw), and grew up with siblings Shirley Colan, Dorothy Ostendorf and Sonny Hoshstrasser
(all deceased). He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Ann and devoted daughters Gayle Margaret Host, Leslie Ann Ackermann (Dennis), grandsons, granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.
Larry graduated from St. Ignatius High School; studied mechanical engineering at Case Western Reserve University; and served as a lieutenant in the Korean War. As an accomplished businessman, he established the successful Host Insurance Agency in Brevard, North Carolina.
Larry was a selfless man, always putting others first, which was demonstrated by the formation of a much needed volunteer fire department in the rural community of Connestee Falls. As fire chief, STEMS president and founder, he introduced the First Responder program providing faster response time in southern Transylvania County. This advantage became the standard for all departments throughout the country.
Being mechanically inclined, Larry was always building or repairing something. He built his own home, restored vintage cars and a player piano. He was a founding member of the local fishing club which promoted sportsmanship for residents and enjoyed fishing in the beautiful mountain lakes. He will be remembered as compassionate man with many talents and ideas. He graciously shared these with others and made a life better for all he knew.
