Laurie Merle Ivler, 70, passed away on Tuesday December 22nd, 2020 at her home in Asheville, NC. She was born on October 18th, 1950 to David and Ruth Ivler in The Bronx, NY.
Laurie’s biggest joy in life, up to her final days, was spending time with her family. She dedicated her career to helping others as a psychotherapist, working in area mental health facilities and then a private counseling practice in Asheville for 33 years.
Laurie was a lover of music and especially enjoyed seeing live shows with her husband Skip. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and a steadfast, loyal friend. She believed in social justice and the betterment and equality for all.
Laurie is preceded in death by her husband of 17 years Skip Edwards. She is survived by her son Ian Urquhart and his wife Kristina Urquhart of Barnardsville, NC; step daughters Casey Gillespie and her husband Michael Gillespie of Tega Cay, SC, and Elizabeth (Dee) Edwards of Pasadena, CA; grandchildren Avalon, Isla, Edward and Jane; sister Judy Jacobs and her husband Jay Jacobs; niece Amy Jacobs and her husband Clark Middleton.
A small private service will be held on Sunday December 27th, 2020 at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary in Mills River, NC. Carolina Memorial Sanctuary will be using a green burial for Laurie and no outside flowers, vases, or memorials are accepted on property. In lieu of that Laurie’s family has requested that donations be made in her honor to her favorite nonprofit, Heifer International, or the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
