Larry Dean Blackwell was born in Pickens, SC to Thomas “Skeeter” Blackwell and Grace Garren on August 8, 1964. While still a young boy, he moved with his family to Hendersonville, NC. He was the baby boy with 4 older sisters —who all spoiled him. He was always outside and enjoyed outdoor adventures with his many cousins growing up.
Graduating from East Henderson High School, Larry enlisted as a U. S. Marine in 1982 where he made lifelong friends. He continued to work hard as a public servant in many different roles and departments. He worked for the NC DOT that included driving the snowplow to clear the mountain roads. Larry also worked as a fire fighter in Edneyville, Mountain Home, Dana, the City of Hendersonville and as the Safety Officer in the City of Fletcher and Station 2 in Hoopers Creek—earning his name “Dozer”. He had a great sense of humor when sharing the stories of his adventures. He joined the Sheriff’s department in 2004 and served as a Sargeant at the Detention Center and later worked for Homeland Security.
In 2002 Larry met Tina Cagle—who became his wife and best friend over the last 2 decades. Together they had their “baby girl” Mary Grace, in December of 2004.
As a family, they volunteered with Toys for Tots for 11 years. Larry was also a member of the American Legion. He loved golfing, grilling and giving rides on his boat.
Larry is survived by: his wife, Tina C. Blackwell and daughter, Mary Grace Blackwell, both of Hendersonville, and many “adopted” children from all over.
Also, his sisters: Donica Geren (Petey), Denise Mofit (Melissa), Diane Sargent, and Darlene Warren. He is also survived by: cousins. nieces, nephews, and many close friends who will all miss him greatly.
A memorial service will be held at Dana Baptist Church on Friday, December 26, 2025 at 12:00 PM.
