Rest in Peace and Fly with the Angels, Bonnie.
LaVonne "Bonnie" Spivey of Asheville has passed away at the age of 83 after a period of declining health. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward, she is survived by her children, Siobhan (Paul), Theresa (Steve), Greg, one treasured grandchild, as well as more relatives throughout the country.
Bonnie loved reading, music, gardening, art, PBS, and animals, and was particularly keen on being of service in a variety of ways at Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher, NC, which she and Ed joined in 2004.
She was passionate about social justice, equal rights, racial reconciliation, and voting. A champion of the underdog, she couldn't abide a bigot. If she had two of something, she would offer you one. Or probably both.
Her career spanned multiple states and included work with the YMCA, Colorado College, and multiple law firms, which involved everything from wrangling horses to office management to legal administrative work.
As opportunities presented themselves, she at times tried new things as varied as creating her own pressed flower art cards, taking fencing lessons, practicing the violin, and driving across the country to see her children in times of both need and celebration.
Thank you to a special group of extra-empathetic nursing home caregivers (you know who y'all are - huge hugs), a variety of elder health generalists and specialists throughout the medical community, the amazing Four Seasons Hospice team who set the gold standard for care and communication, and to her church family, including The Reverend J. Clarkson, Rector, whose timing and words are part of some perfect cosmic plan. Each of these groups and people are truly called to the type of service they offered, easing Bonnie's journey.
Thank you also to Asheville Area Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services for their kind support.
If you are so inclined, please think of Bonnie as you perform a gesture of service or a random act of kindness, or as you donate to Four Seasons Hospice (https://fourseasonscare.org/), or to Calvary Episcopal Church (https://www.calvaryfletcher.org/give-online).
Services will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church on Tuesday, May 20th, 11:00 am, 2840 Hendersonville Road, Fletcher, NC 28732.
