John Edward Smith, Jr., of Swannanoa, North Carolina, went to be with the Lord, July 1, 2024, at age 73. The eldest child of Helen Taylor Smith and John E. Smith, Sr., John was born in Jackson, Tennessee, January 12, 1951, and graduated from Jackson High School in 1969. John went on to attend the University of Tennessee where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and then served in the United States Army National Guard.
At an early age, John developed a passion for golf, researching the Civil War, duck hunting, and collecting antique memorabilia. John was also a certified Real Estate appraiser.
John is survived by his sister, Ceil Williams (Bill), and their children: Taylor Williams (Danna), Allison Treadwell (Hunt), and Frannie Williams as well as five great nieces and nephews.
John was formerly married for 34 years to Patti Koester Smith of Black Mountain, North Carolina. His beloved dogs, Gator and Bubba are now at home with Patti. “Smitty,” as friends called him, remember John for his jovial smile, and giving heart as well as caring for and helping others.
A memorial will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 4:00 pm at the River Walk Dog Park in Black Mountain, where John loved daily outings with his dogs.
