John F. Murphy IV, 63, of Candler passed away on Friday, January 29, 2021 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville. Born August 2, 1957 in Bridgeport, CT, he was a son of the late John F. Murphy III and Maureen Coleman Murphy. He was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, CT class of 1975. John went to Next Step Recovery to recover from alcoholism and stayed on to become one of the founding members. For the past 14 years he worked at Next Step Recovery and became a board member. He served as an overnight shift manager and was a profound cheerleader for the organization. Never did he waiver in his commitment to sobriety and he always looked forward to going to work each and every night no matter what. He was a strong stable force whom at times came across as grumpy, but the real John would always shine through with love, compassion, dedication, knowledge, and a friendly ear to many residents throughout his years. John was an integral part of the fabric of Next Step Recovery and will be sorely missed. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Kevin G. Murphy and James J. Murphy. Surviving are his siblings, Tara E. Johnson of Marshville, NC, Peter T. Murphy of Stratford, CT, and Maureen G. Forno and her spouse, James, of Monroe, CT; sister-in-law, Nancy T. Murphy of Shelton, CT; and several nephews and a niece. A celebration of his life will be held at noon on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Grail House, 24 Grail Street, Asheville, NC 28801.
