John Gregory Moebes, Jr. (“Greg”), 73, left this world peacefully surrounded by his art on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, in his adopted hometown of Asheville, North Carolina.
Greg was born on April 12, 1952 in Greensboro, NC, the son of Jack and Betty Moebes. He was considered a child prodigy artist and from an early age, won many awards for his fine art. After graduating from Grimsley Sr. High School, he attended the prestigious Art Students League of New York in New York City. Greg was also a very talented photographer who truly was able to see what most of us do not.
Greg was also a kind, unassuming, and highly-intelligent person who handled many challenges in life with a rare gift of acceptance and fortitude. Near his death, when his sister asked him what he felt most proud of in his life, he said, “I feel confident that I’ve never hurt anyone.” Those who knew him would attest to the truth of that, and it’s a goal to which he would want us all to aspire.
In addition to his parents, Greg was preceded in death by his brother Steven Dominic Moebes in 2009 and his brother Christopher Joseph Moebes in 2022. He is survived by his sister Anne Moebes, sister-in-law Katrina Winters (Malcomb), niece and nephews, Thursall Celle (Nicolas), Thorsen Winters and Kyle Winters (Gaby), as well as his great-nieces and nephews and friends.
In lieu of a public memorial service, the family invites everyone to share their memories of Greg here, including any pictures or videos.
To all the caring staff at Emerald Ridge and Hospice of Carolina Foothills, Anne extends her thanks and gratitude.
Those wishing to honor Greg’s life are encouraged to contribute to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (www.nami.org), which is dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Asheville Area Alternative Funeral and Cremation Services of Asheville, NC
