James Sumner Obituary

James Lamar “Sam” “Emo” Sumner 59, of Candler passed away Thursday, March 25, 2021. Lamar was born January 19, 1962 in Mission Hospital and lived his whole life in this area. He was the son of CJ Sumner and the late Fonda Sumner of Candler, who passed away in 2006. In addition to his mom, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Iris and Fulton Bradley of Weaverville, and Clarence and Gladys Sumner of Asheville. Lamar was a 1980 graduate of Enka High School. He received his NC electrical license in 1982 and his unlimited license in 1989. He enjoyed his work, working at Bolton Corp, Rosendin Electric on the Facebook facility in Forest City NC and the Apple facility in Maiden NC and most recently with the Gephart Electric on the Harrah’s Cherokee resort expansion in Cherokee NC. His passions included classic rock and roll; John Boy & Billy, NASCAR, the television show 24, his Dodge Challenger and cooking great food to share with his family and friends. In addition to his father, Lamar is survived by his daughters, Jessica Freeman and husband, Layne, of Arden, and Jillian Carroll and husband, Tate, of Huntersville; son, Justin Bagwell and, wife, Ashley of Fletcher; grandsons, Kamm and Krew Freeman of Arden, and Wesley Carroll of Huntersville, Blaze Bagwell of Arden and baby girl, Carroll, due April 6th; the mother of his children, Cheryl Dillingham Sumner of Covington, GA; sisters, Rene Simpson and husband, Gary, of Arden, and Michelle Sprinkle of Candler, nephew, Bryan Simpson of Arden; aunt, LaDonna S Bowers of Seattle WA; uncle, Michael Sumner and wife, Audrie, of Asheville. There will be a Memorial Service, Wednesday, April 14th at 2pm at Harvest Time Assembly of God, 225 Summit Street in Asheville, NC, 28803. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Asheville Area Alternative Funeral & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
