Mr. Slautich was my tenth grade English teacher at Fairfax High School, and when I described my high school English teachers, I always said, "I got lucky when I got Mr. Slautich." I remember him for so many reasons, a few of which I'll share here:

I remember he had high expectations of us and our performance as students, and a serious, sometimes intimidating classroom presence. Then, seemingly for very little reason, his warmth would come through. He'd light up talking about characters in literature or film, or when leading a passionate classroom discussion about a scene in My Darling Clementine, or as he told us a story about his cat keeping him company as he read at home. Once, when I was struggling with a friend's death and missing countless classes, he offered me a moment of gentle compassion that I still remember almost twenty-five years later.

I also remember the thrill of learning to see films in a whole new way. Mr. Slautich had our entire sophomore class obsessed with the film Cool Hand Luke, and he's a major reason that I later took film classes in college and grad school. He's also a major reason that I became a good enough reader to later become a professional writer.

I'm very grateful for the year I spent learning from him, and I'm holding him and his family in my thoughts.

With love,
Ashleigh

So sorry for your loss. He was our high school drama teacher and was a super guy and mentor. He influenced thousands of kids through his teaching and plays. Sounds like he had a great life in Asheville and lived life to the fullest all the way.

We can celebrate his life.   He made the world a better place, even as he was traveling on his Journey.  God's love and Namaste.
(Jim was a powerful advocate in NAMI-WC)
