James “Giz” Martin
October 22, 1934 – February 20, 2025
James “Giz” Martin, 90, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025. Born in Marquette, MI, he was the son of Wilfrid “Gus” J. Martin and Helen M. Lemin.
Giz was a man of deep faith, unwavering kindness, and a love for family, friends, and community. A graduate in Dentistry from Northwestern University, he built a successful private practice before entering a career with the VA Hospitals. His work reflected his strong commitment to those who served, a value shaped by his own time in the military as a veteran of the Korean War.
Beyond his professional achievements, Giz was a passionate aviator embracing the freedom and adventure that flying offered. He was also a long standing member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), an organization dedicated to aviation research, learning, and innovation—values that deeply resonated with him. His curiosity and passion for flight extended beyond piloting; he was fascinated by the mechanics and advancements in aviation, always eager to learn and explore new possibilities. After moving to Asheville he became an active member of the Western North Carolina Pilots Association.
An enthusiast of all things active. Giz found joy in downhill, cross county, and water skiing. He enjoyed working out regularly. He especially treasured his walks with his beloved wife, Betty, along the scenic trails of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, where they shared countless moments amidst the estate’s natural beauty.
Giz’s passion for learning was evident throughout his life. He possessed an insatiable curiosity, continually seeking knowledge and embracing new experiences. His love for education was not only a personal pursuit but also a value he instilled in his family and community.
Above all, Giz was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Martin; his children, Jessica Martin and Sam Austin (Peter); and predeceased by Charlotte Wood, the mother of James Martin (Jeneen), Sally Carlson (Dan), and David Martin (Donna). He was a proud grandfather to Dr. Nicole Martin, Halee Martin, Pema Austin, Tsali Austin, and Bodhi Austin.
He is also survived by his siblings, Paul Martin (Diane), Judy Martin (Lynn Jondahl), and Susie Hooper (Jack). He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his siblings Joyce Marie Martin, Robert Martin, Jean Martin Bell, and Constance “Connie” Balzola.
Giz’s legacy is one of love, generosity, and integrity. He lived his life with a quiet strength, a gentle heart, and an enduring faith that guided him in all he did. His presence will be deeply missed but forever cherished by those who knew him.
