James Hall Obituary

In Loving Memory of James “Jim” Hammond Hall

September 25,1954 – May 30, 2025

James “Jim” Hammond Hall, age 70, passed away peacefully at his home in Nebo, North Carolina, on May 30, 2025, after bravely battling dementia and pancreatic cancer.

Jim was born in Vilus, Wisconsin, to Charles Hammond Hall Sr. and Sheila Langford Hall. From an early age, Jim was drawn to music—particularly the blues—and his talent for the electric guitar quickly set him apart. Over the years, he became known as one of the finest electric blues guitarists of his generation.

His musical journey took him across the United States, where he played alongside legendary performers including David Allan Coe, the Charlie Daniels Band, Carole King, Reba McEntire, Shania Twain, Bonnie Raitt, Mel Tillis, Etta Baker, Pop Ferguson, and Jim Wise and the Sky High Band, with whom he performed for 18 years.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Jim served with honor as a Sergeant for the North Carolina Department of Corrections at Foothills Correctional Institution. It was during his time there that he met the love of his life, Sharon Bennett Hall. The two shared a deep and devoted partnership, built on mutual respect, support, and enduring love.

Jim was also a talented metal smith and knife maker. As the founder of Jim Hall Handmade Knives, he was admired for his craftsmanship and artistry. His custom knives were known not only for their beauty and precision, but for the heart and skill that went into every creation.

Jim was preceded in death by his Brother Brian Hammond Hall; Father Charles Hammond Hall SR; Sister Pamela Morris and his mother Sheila Langford Hall

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Bennett Hall, 4 siblings: Shannon Egan of Hildebran, Kelly Patton of Morganton, Stacey Peterson of Asheville, and Charles Hammond Hall Jr.of Germany. He is also survived by 4 children Don Early (Washington) Patrick Bennett (Nebo) Amanda Duckworth (Morganton) Melissa Hall (Hickory) and his 4 legged best friend, his pitbull Harley.  Jim leaves behind 13 grandchildren and extended family members, dear friends, fellow musicians, and countless admirers of his music and craftsmanship.

Jim lived a life full of purpose, passion, and generosity. He will be remembered not only for his musical brilliance and skilled hands but for the love, loyalty, and quiet strength he gave to those around him.

His legacy will live on in every note he played, every knife he forged, and every life he touched.

The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.
