Dr. Jacquelyn Johns Schechter, 83, of Asheville, NC, died Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the Four Seasons Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC.
Dr. Schechter was born in Macomb, IL and grew up in Mendota, IL. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Duquesne University and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Florida. She had private practice in psychology in several cities, was Director of Student Life at Westminster Choir College in Princeton NJ, and worked in student counseling centers at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, the University of Colorado at Boulder, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Asheville. An inveterate photographer, she showed her work in craft and art shows, won several awards, and earned a certificate in Documentary Studies from Duke University. She was a student of meditation teacher Shinzen Young. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ephraim Schechter, their children & stepchildren Jann Barron of Red Feather Lakes CO, Steffan Knapp of Boulder CO, Amy Warner of Landisville PA, and Beth Vizzini of Canyon TX and by their children, and by her sister Jeri Atherton of Mendota, IL.
A private family gathering will take place at a later date.
