Heinz O. Freese, 90, died peacefully of natural causes on Friday, February 5, 2021 at the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center.
A native of Berlin, Germany, Heinz spent the greater part of his life in Chicago, where he married his lifelong love, Elizabeth (DeGroot) Freese. During their 53 years of marriage he raised two daughters, Lisanne Freese and Bettina Freese. He spent his last ten years in Asheville. He will be missed by his many friends, his family in Germany, his daughters, and his grandsons Elijah Freese and Wyatt Hinker of Asheville.
Heinz worked for Siemens, the largest manufacturing company in Europe, attended Chicago Technical College, and worked as an expert machinist for various Tool & Die companies. He was a Master Mason at the King Oscar Lodge in Chicago for over 50 years. He enjoyed gardening, restoring antiques, and creating beautiful stained glass art and Navajo-style jewelry of semi-precious stone and sterling silver.
He belonged to various Save the Dunes organizations on the lakeshore of Indiana, where he had a summer home. His ashes will be scattered with those of his late wife among the dunescapes that he loved.
