Frank “Bob” Roberts Hanning Jr., 85, passed away peacefully in Asheville, North Carolina, on Saturday, December 27, 2025. Born in Dallas, Texas, he was the son of the late Frank Roberts Hanning, Sr. and Iris Deane Martin Hanning.
Bob’s life was defined by service and scholarship. He attended Indiana University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, participated in the ROTC program, and earned his law degree. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Intelligence in Korea. In 1967, Bob joined the law firm of Foley & Lardner LLP, where he became a partner and dedicated his career to the practice of labor law.
Throughout his life, Bob lived around the country but mainly resided in Marion and Bloomington, IN; Milwaukee, WI; Cedarburg, WI; and Black Mountain, NC. A man of quiet intellect, he was an avid reader who enjoyed sharing his love of books with others while at Barnes & Noble in his later years. He also found joy in painting and the challenge of a daily crossword puzzle.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Susan Lavengood Hanning; his children, David Hanning (Elena Dmitrievskaya) of Dunlap, TN, Kathryn “Katie” Hanning of South Deerfield, MA, and Sara “Sasha” Hanning of Chicago, IL; and his nieces, Heather Hanning of North Carolina and Erica Hanning of Germany. He was a proud grandfather to Clare, Lillian, and Jade Walker-Hanning, and Alexander and Melina Hanning.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Duane and Richard Hanning, and his son-in-law, Todd Walker.
