Frances Crawford Obituary

Frances M. Crawford of Asheville, NC died January 22, 2026 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. Frances was born in Port Dickinson, NY January 14, 1929 to Mary Eva (Smey) and Carl Rosenzweig.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Marion Brown and Walter Rosenzweig, daughter Marcia Gallegos and her husband of 65 years, Clyde L. Crawford. Frances is survived by her son Gary and his wife Belinda (Ginsberg) of Haymarket, VA; daughters Cindy Cade of Sheridan, WY and Sharon Crawford of Asheville, NC as well as 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Frances graduated from Binghamton North High School. She went on to graduate from the Charles S. Wilson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Johnson City, NY. She worked there for 2 years until giving birth to her first child. Shortly thereafter, she accepted a unique dual role at the Chenango Bridge Medical Center. She was the office nurse during the center’s open hours, as well the 1st medical contact for after hour emergencies at night and on weekends. Her young family resided in the center’s single downstairs apartment. This lasted for several years until the family grew too big for apartment. In pursuit of NY state school nurse requirements Frances enrolled in SUNY Cortland night classes in order to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree. Cortland being in NY’s snow belt with an elevation over 1100 feet is also known for its winter downhill skiing. The roads there from Binghamton were a treacherous drive in the winter. Yet she persevered several years of night classes and harrowing rides and achieved her bachelor’s degree. She worked and retired in 1990 after 22 years of dedicated service as a School Nurse Teacher in the Binghamton school district. While Frances officially retired from her School Nurse position she never retired from nursing and continued to nurse family members through their illness and keep them at home.

At the age of 65 Frances took up Taekwondo. A month shy of her 72nd birthday she earned her black belt. A remarkable feat at any age. All the more remarkable at hers.

“The love and strength I see in my family started with you. I see it in my mom and in the kind of person she is, and I know that comes from what you passed down. I’m really grateful for that.

I believe in a loving and merciful God, and I am praying that you feel peace, comfort, and reassurance. I pray that you feel surrounded by love, that you know how deeply you are cared for, and that you can rest knowing how much good your life has brought into the world.

Thank you for everything you did and for the family you built. You’ll always be part of us.
”

Great-grandson
