Eric Mauney

Eric Mauney, age 52, a beloved figure of Mills River, North Carolina, sadly left our world on March 21, 2025 after a life richly lived in service to his family and friends. Known for his enthusiasm, humor and personal accomplishments, Eric was a beacon of positivity and resilience in our family, lighting the mood wherever he went. Eric’s influence within the Ham Radio community left lasting impacts. Dedicated to his family and friends. Eric will be absolutely missed.

Eric was an avid Amateur Radio Operator, (Ham Radio), Beginning at a very young age, he was first licensed as a Technician Plus, under the call sign KC4LWX. Later he advanced to General Class and then Extra Class, where he changed his call sign to W4ENC. Eric was one of the early adopters of Digital Ham Radio with D-Star and was the trustee of the first D-Star Repeater, KJ4JAL. Later, he was also the trustee of the NC4BS D-Star Repeater. Eric was active on all Ham bands, 2 meters through 160 meters, and all digital formats to include D-Star, DMR, System Fusion, and NXDN. Eric always had multiple Ham Radios, Scanners, and Hot Spots on at any given time, listening and talking to Hams around the world. Eric was part of the Amateur Radio team that provided emergency communications for the Black Mountain area after Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina. During that time, he served as the Net Control, relaying Information from the Ham Radio Operators in the field to the Emergency Operations Center.

Eric was preceded in death by his father, Jack Randall Mauney, Grandfather Jack Mauney, Grandmother Frances Lynn Mauney, Grandfather John Thad Ashe and Grandmother Edith Ashe Green. Eric is survived by his mother, Sharon Moffitt (Grady), his children Quinton Mauney and Brooke Mauney. He had many extended family and close friends. 

There will be a Celebration of Life on May 3, 2025 2pm-5pm at Speak Life Community Church in Hendersonville, NC. This will be a drop in to share the legacy Eric left behind.
