Elizabeth Cruickshank Obituary

Elizabeth “Betty” Jane (Kilmer) Cruickshank of Westerly R.I., passed peacefully on December 13, 2025, at the age of 91. She is survived by younger brother Bob Kilmer, son Steve Cruickshank and his wife Debi Cruickshank, her grandchildren Nick Cruickshank (wife Daniella Thorsdottir), Sean Cruickshank, and Dana Cruickshank (partner Udara Nagodavithana), and many nieces and nephews. Betty is now re-joined with her late husband George Cruickshank, oldest son Chris Cruickshank, and older brother Bill Kilmer.

Betty was born in Old Greenwich, CT to William and Grace Kilmer, grew up in the surrounding neighborhoods, and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1952. During her younger years, Betty enjoyed a variety of activities, including baton twirling, volleyball, field hockey, and sailing.

After high school, Betty attended the University of Connecticut, where she joined the Phi Mu sorority and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Sociology. It was during this time that Betty met George, going roller skating for their first date. They married later in 1956, settled first in Shady Harbor and later in Dunns Corners to raise their family. During this time, Betty continued her education at Willimantic State College (now Eastern Connecticut State University), earning a Masters’ degree in June 1965.

Professionally, Betty was a teacher for 31 years, mainly in 4th grade at Dunns Corners Elementary. She always enjoyed running into former students during chance encounters. Even in the final months, as Alzheimer’s gradually stole most of her memories, she always identified as a teacher. Outside of school, Betty enjoyed the active life of skiing and golf, eventually becoming a three-time club champion at nearby Elmridge Country Club.

Upon retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling the world with George, playing golf, watching live entertainment (Connecticut Suns basketball games and concerts), and taking scenic drives around Watch Hill. Throughout her life, Betty also enjoyed knitting and word/number puzzles. During their life together, George and Betty had residences throughout the east coast (SC, NH, FL, and finally NC) but maintained a consistent presence in Westerly, RI.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Westerly, RI, details are still being determined. If you would like to make a donation in her memory, Betty’s preferred charities are the Chris W Cruickshank Scholarship Fund (c/o 404 S Shore Village Blvd., South Kingstown, RI 02879) or the Alzheimer’s Association (https://donorservices.alz.org).
