Obituary

Edward Douglas Bowens (Eddie), 74, passed away peacefully at CarePartners Hospice in Asheville, NC, on April 15, 2023, after a brief illness.

Edward was born in North Wilkesboro, NC, on March 22, 1949, to the late Willie Bowens, Sr., and the late Annie Powell Bowens. He grew up in Bryson City, NC, and later moved to Asheville, NC, where he attended South French Broad High School and was an outstanding basketball player. Also, Edward was a star basketball player for Fred T Foard High School in Hickory, NC, for a brief period.

Edward graduated from South French Broad High School with the class of 1967. Later, Edward served in the United States Army serving in Korea and received an honorable discharge.

Edward joined Worldwide Missionary Baptist Tabernacle at an early age under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr.

For many years Edward was a truck driver in California and worked for the American Red Cross before retiring.

Also, Edward was preceded in death by brothers: Willie Bowens, Jr., Bobby Lee Bowens, Milton Ray Bowens, and Pervis Dean Bowens.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Louise Regina Bowens; a son, Jesse Baily of Muskogee, OK; stepdaughters: Lisa McCaskill, Candace Morton (Ricky), NaTashia Pointe, and DeShaunna McCaskill all of Greensboro, NC: as well as 15 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren: brothers: Harold Bowens and Charles Eugene Bowens, sisters: Linda Darnell Jones (Bobby), and Andrea Purcell (Wayne) all of Asheville, NC and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family wants to thank everyone for their prayers, calls, and other acts of kindness—thanks to the VA Medical Center and CarePartners Hospice staff.

Also, a special thanks to Worldwide Missionary Baptist Tabernacle, the Reverends Dr. Lewis, and James Grant.

The Celebration of Edwards' life will take place at Worldwide Missionary Baptist Tabernacle, 85 Choctaw Street, Asheville, NC 28801 on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at noon visitation with the family will be 30 minutes prior to service.

A burial will follow at Black Mountain State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
