Edward Hawkins Obituary

Edward “Eddie” Alan Hawkins, 48, of Asheville passed away suddenly on January 10, 2019 at his home.  He was born January 6, 1971 at U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA and grew up in the Haw Creek Community of Asheville.  In 1989 he graduated from A.C. Reynolds High School with Red Ribbon high honors in woodworking.  He was employed at Cooper House Cabinet Makers where he designed and built cabinets, tables, and china-cabinets for many customers including Andie McDowell in Biltmore Forest.  At present time, he was employed at FREER Logic Inc. At the age of 25 an accident caused him to become a paralytic in a wheelchair for life but that didn’t limit him.  He built 2 hand-controlled bicycles, flew remote planes and helicopters with many friends at the fly field, played wheelchair tennis at numerous tournaments in several states and was a mentor to several young people who were disabled like him. He is survived by his mother, Elva Vogelsang Hawkins, father, Howard C. Hawkins, Sr., brother, Howard “Howie” C. Hawkins, Jr., a special friend, Rebecca Hurst, his tennis partner and friend, Jeff Kegler, and numerous other friends.  Eddie was a very caring and compassionate man.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.
