Derry Lynn Young Williams

Derry Lynn Young, born June 30, 1927 in Memphis TN died August 26, 2025 at her home in Flat Rock NC. She was the beloved only child of Lonnie Eugene Young and Edith Truman Cox. A military wife and mother of 5 children, she adapted to new situations with grace and humor. After graduation from Ole Miss, she married Wayne G. Williams from Asheville, NC in 1947 and together they moved wherever the Army JAG Corp stationed them. A widow since 1985 and retiring from a successful career in real estate at the age of 83, she became involved in many volunteer organizations in Henderson County, her work abruptly ending with Covid. She will be remembered for her insistence on reading a book a day, completing a puzzle a day, her fierce loyalty to family, Coca Cola products and milk chocolate.

Her final days were spent surrounded by the beauty she created in her home, being served by a caring team from Four Seasons Hospice. She leaves behind 2 sons, Wayne D. Williams of Pie Town, NM; Mark G. Williams of PeWee Valley, KY (Tracey); 2 daughters Ellen W. Sugarman of Flat Rock, NC and Amy L. Williams of Newark, Ohio. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan C. Maguire in 2023 as well as 2 grandsons, W. Travis Graves and Sammy E. Williams. Her remaining 5 grandchildren mourn the loss of their Grammy (Oma) D - Joshua C. Williams (Gabi); Christopher A. Maguire (Lauren); Sarah M. Marston (Rob); Rose Witschi and Fiona G. Williams. Her great grandchildren brought joy to her life - Aurelia Marston, Henry Williams and Leo Marston. She loved travel and all things British, especially British mysteries and history.

Her family plans to take her ashes to Cornwall, England in the spring.
