Dennis Kafsky Obituary

Dennis Joseph Kafsky, 78, of Brevard for the past 23 years, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. Born March 2, 1945 in Cleveland, OH, he was the son of the late Joseph John Kafsky and Genevieve Wolosz Kafsky. Dennis was a professional Communication Technician and Manager with Ohio Bell and later AT&T from the start of his career until his retirement. During the Vietnam War, he proudly served in the United States Army stationed in Germany. Dennis was an engaged and active leader in his communities, an advocate for personal growth and a supportive friend to many.  He was an outdoor adventurer who enjoyed hiking, camping, whitewater paddling, and sailing. He was a sailor with the Highlander Class including Sailing Associations at Edgewater, Cowan Lake in Ohio, and Lake Norman and Western Carolina Sailing Associations in North and South Carolina. He volunteered with the Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Center in the Pisgah National Forest, and regularly helped make the outdoors feel accessible for others by sharing trail and program information and by inviting old and new friends on hikes.  Dennis was inspired by and expressed gratitude for all of the people in his communities that shared in his rich life journey. He was especially proud of and grateful for his relationship with Fran Steigerwald of Dublin, VA.  They met as teenagers, were married for 17 years and remained significant friends for an additional 39 years. Together, they made their family legacy of outdoors, growth, and love possible.  Among Dennis’s proudest accomplishments were his family and strong connection to the community which centered him as he expressed in his own words - “11,801 days, all in a row, one day at a time. 32 years. Gratitude. Who wudda thunk it? A great adventure for sure.” Thanks to all for being a part of his life of love, learning, and growth.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Kafsky; son, Joseph Kafsky; and grandson Trace Kafsky. Surviving are his children, Jennifer Lise Kafsky of Brevard, NC, Michael Kafsky and his spouse, Rachel, of Charlotte, NC, Christopher Kafsky and his spouse, Jen, of Clarkesville, GA, Elise Hemmer and her spouse, Gus, of Green Bay, VA, Julia Kafsky Hitchcock of Brevard, NC, Nick Kafsky and his spouse, Lael, of Waynesville, NC; grandchildren, Sage Myers and her spouse, Colten, and their child, Fiona Myers (great granddaughter) all of Reliance, TN, Reid Kafsky, Layne Kafsky, Clay Kafsky, and Laurel Blake Kafsky all of Clarkesville, GA, Gibson Kafsky and Landis Kafsky both of Charlotte, NC, Josephine Hemmer and Sylvia Hemmer both of Green Bay, VA, Drew DeGarmo and Wilsen DeGarmo both of Brevard, NC, Gavin, Nicholas Connor Hitchock, Juniper Kafsky, and Cora Kafsky all of Brevard, NC, and Jamison Kafsky of Waynesville, NC.
