On the morning of Wednesday, September 16, 2020 we lost our matriarch. God called and Daisy Agnes Lanning, 87, answered and went to join those waiting for her on the other shore.
Born April 1, 1933 in Buncombe County, NC, she was the daughter of the late George Vanderbilt Raines and Jo Alice Raines. She retired from Terry Enterprise after 25 years of service. Daisy enjoyed working in her garden and spending time with her family. She treated her many nieces and nephews just like her own children and treated her friends like family. They were always welcome and made to feel like they were at home. Daisy was an amazing cook (as long as it wasn’t dessert). Her green beans were legendary and her biscuits would melt in your mouth. We would often eat dinner on Sundays and looked forward to it every week. We also had many big holiday dinners. She was devoted to her Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her spouse, George Lanning, Sr.; brothers, Frank, Nelson, Sammy, Carol, Charlie, Ed, and Harold Raines; brother-in-law, Serbern Lanning; and her children, James, Jessie, and George Lanning, Jr.
Surviving are her children, Anne Bradley of Asheville, David Lanning and his spouse, Ramona, of Fletcher, and Ricky Lanning and his spouse, Connie, of Leicester; siblings, Georgia Basham of Arden, and Mamie Holloway of Mississippi; brother-in-law, Dexter Lanning; and numerous, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, September 18, 2020 at the chapel of Asheville Area Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services. A funeral service for Daisy will be held at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at Richland Baptist Church with Rev. Donald Hare and Rev. Jack Gassaway officiating. Burial will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.
