Charles Eugene Fore, age 87 departed this earthly world on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. He joins his sweetheart of 67 years, Verna who passed before him this past September. Charles was born and raised in Asheville, NC. He joined the Navy and was stationed in Key West, FL. He and Verna met while he was on leave in Asheville where she was in nursing school. During his Navy years, he was trained as a mechanic for airplanes. When he left the Navy, he returned to Asheville to marry the love of his life. After the small wedding, they packed their few belongings and drove to Southern California where most of his immediate family had relocated. Charles initially worked for an electric company before he and his dad opened up a service station. Three children and 10 years later, Charles and Verna decided to return to Asheville to raise their family. He began working with the NC Department of Transportation from where he would retire some 25 years later. The family attended Victory Baptist Church where Charles was active with Sunday school, singing and playing guitar with the choir, and the Sunshine Club’s travels and community service. In retirement, both Charles and Verna were very active with the church’s meal delivery program for shut-ins. They also enjoyed traveling the United States.
Charles is survived by his children and their spouses, Gene (Cheryl) of Asheville, NC, Carol Injaychock (Tom) of Fort Mill, SC, Cheryl Longshore (Jim) of Irmo, SC, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, and brother, Ted (Betty) of Camas, WA.
Charles’ sweet, kind, positive spirit, that made you glad to be in his presence will be deeply missed. He is where he prefers to be, by his beloved wife’s side.
A special thanks to all the medical personnel that helped us navigate these last several months. The hospital and in-home care nurses always voted him their most favorite patient. And a huge thanks to the Charlie Angels: Jan, Trish, and Bonnie, who were his devoted caregivers that became extended family.
A service is not planned due to COVID. Please send your favorite memory story to the family via the online obituary with Asheville Area Alternative that is handling the last stage of Charles’ physical journey. Should you wish to make a charitable contribution in his honor, either Victory Baptist Church, 80 Olivette Road, Asheville NC 28804 designating a donation for their community outreach program, or a meals program of your choice, would please him.
