Catherine Clary Gray Fitzpatrick passed away due to cardiac disease at home in Asheville, NC on September 28, 2022.
She was born to parents Sandra and Jon Gray, November 15, 1965, in Kokomo, Indiana and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, attending local public schools. Catherine received a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design from Virginia Tech in 1989.
Affectionately known to family and her friend-families as Cath, Cathy and Fitz, her most cherished title was Mom. Cath is survived by sons Michael James Fitzpatrick Jr. of Wilmington, NC, and Jonathan Cleary Fitzpatrick of Tempe, AZ, the absolute lights of her life, and her husband Michael James Fitzpatrick.
Cathy was still mourning the recent passing of her dear father, Jon C. Gray. She is survived by her mom, Sandra Sykes Gray, of Alexandria, VA; Scott Gray, of Annapolis, MD; Jon D. Gray of Warrenton, VA and 13 nieces and nephews across the Gray-Fitz families.
Her life’s journey created communities of friendships that are all saddened by her loss – VT girls, Denver Park Hill, MCI and LoDo, Fort Hunt HS and cheer team, Asheville pottery, city schools and work friends. She met Mike in Denver, where the boys were born and countless ski memories created over 16 years. Onto 11 wonderful family years in Asheville.
Those who loved Cathy mention her kindness first, always. She was curious, fiercely devoted, laughed uniquely and loved the wonder of travel and the thrill of thrifting. Home was happiest, other special places were family trips to Outer Banks, Telluride, Kiawah, Glacier and the Canyon.
Fitz was a maker. Most important to her, homemaker to her 3 boys and beloved dogs. Making art and lifelong creative exploration led most recently to the healing arts of pottery in Asheville.
In lieu of flowers or other support, for those who would like to contribute to the arts education for the creatively-curious of all ages, a fund has been set up in Catherine’s spirit. It will be administered by Fitz’ pottery mentor and dear friend Mac. PayPal: @CathFitzArtistFund
