Billy “Roy” Alexander, 77, passed away early morning Saturday, January 25th, 2025. Born and raised in Asheville, NC, he had a deep devotion to the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Roy spent most of his life in the woods of WNC, and spent most of his free time hiking, fishing or hunting. When he wasn’t outdoors, the Appalachian Mountains shaped his other passions. His great respect for nature translated into superb craftsmanship, often through the use of traditional tools and techniques. His artistry included flint knapping arrowheads from solid rock using bone tools, fly tying trout flies made with animal hair and feathers, and longbow building using wood, bamboo, glue and a pocket knife. He was a gifted archer and used his handmade bows when he volunteered at both the Blue Ridge Bowhunters Archery Club and the Carolina Traditional Archers Club.
Roy spent nearly his entire career with McGill Associates where in more than four decades he distinguished himself with honesty and integrity—qualities that earned him lasting friendships and deep respect among colleagues and clients. Beyond his professional life, he believed in passing on knowledge and supporting the next generation. This commitment was demonstrated by over a decade of volunteer service with Boy Scout Troop 53, where he generously shared his outdoor expertise and moral compass with countless young people.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Roy cherished his family. He is gratefully remembered and survived by his wife of 49 years, Inez Alexander; his two sons David (Bonnie) and Jeffrey; and his granddaughter, Billie Rose, who is proudly named after him; and his younger brother, Troy (Beverly).
Roy’s dedication to family, integrity, and the love for the mountains of Western North Carolina will be carried on in the memories of all who knew him.
A Celebration of Roy’s Life will take place at 3:00 pm on February 16th, 2025 and it will be held at Groce United Methodist Church, 954 Tunnel Rd, Asheville, NC 28805. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to honor Roy’s memory by donating to Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. If you have any questions, please reach out to Jeff at 828.777.6000.
