Surrounded by loved ones, Billy Vernon Messer passed away on September 10, 2005 after several long-term illnesses.
He is a lifelong resident of Haywood County, born in Panther Creek and later residing in Hazelwood and Waynesville.
He served his country faithfully as a Green Beret in Vietnam, and later served his country and fellow veterans as a District Service Officer, helping soldiers and their families get the benefits they earned.
He was a very faithful man, attending Central Haywood Church of Christ in Clyde and serving as an Elder for decades.
He is preceded in death by his father Vernon Messer, his mother Marie Hill Messer, and his beloved grandparents.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Laura, his two sons Anthony and Chad, his grandson Aydan, his adopted daughter Pam Mathis, and his siblings Jean Pruitt, Judy Hall, Robin Farr, and Stanley McElroy.
