Annette Richards Obituary

Annette Richards, born in Niagara Falls, New York, eighty years ago to Carmella and Theodore DeLorenzo, died here in her beloved Asheville on the morning of February 14. Anyone who knew Annette would agree that her passing on the Day of Love and Friendship was entirely fitting for a person of her generous spirit and kind heart.

She graduated from Niagara Falls High School and then Alfred Tech with a degree in business, and went on to a career as an executive secretary. After she came to Asheville in 1993 with her husband, Gene Richards, she studied to be a paralegal and worked in that capacity until her retirement in 2017.

But Annette, to her friends, was more than an efficient career woman who volunteered at the Asheville Visitors’ Center and Eblen Charities and loved doing TaiChi at the YWCA. She was a welcoming friend who offered us a place to stay whether we needed a couple of days or several months. She was not judgmental, always accepting. Her heart was open. But besides her life filled with friends there were always dogs. Usually small dogs, usually not more than two at a time, but sometimes three and once five, with such names as John Barley Corn, Popcorn Amelia, and Chippie, aka Chipper Lee. She was devoted to these dogs, and vigilant about animal welfare.

But as important as these dogs and friends were in her life, for the last thirty or more years Annette had focused on seeking her spiritual truth by studying the Course of Miracles , attending Unity Fellowship and then other groups that studied such varied teachers as Eckhart Tolle and Ram Dass. One of her favorite sayings was… We’re here just walking each other home.” She will be sorely missed by so many. Such a beautiful person.

Plans for a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Donations may be made to Brother Wolfe and to Memory Care.
