Anne Black Ray died peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025. She was born on October 12,1927 to Alice Mildred Clark and George Inglis Black in Erie, Pennsylvania and spent the rest of her life in Asheville. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Robert Lee Ray, Sr. and her daughter Jennifer Leigh Ray. Surviving are Robert Lee Ray, Jr. and wife Fran, Victoria Ray Seay and husband Tommy, Ellen Ray Lusk and husband Wayne, Alice Marie Mills and husband Chris, nine beloved grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, along with “bonus” grandchildren, beloved nieces and nephews, and many family friends who consider her their Mama Ray. Anne marveled that she continued to make new friends to the end. We all smile as we remember her quick wit, sense of humor, love of Scrabble, and her countess creations with needle and thread. All she ever wanted was to be a good wife and mother. Well done, good and faithful servant. As she leaves us, remember her parting words, “Be good – you know how you are!”
Anne’s family gives unending thanks to the amazing care Mom received through Four Seasons Hospice. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to this fine organization. Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 30 at Grace Episcopal Church, Asheville, at 11AM, followed by a party. Wear party clothes! Arrangements made by Asheville Area Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services.
