Albert James Smith

Albert James Smith, 89, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Born May 7, 1934, in Asheville, he was a son of the late Archie and Margaret Smith. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Asheville and was a talented musician playing the mandolin specializing in Bluegrass and Gospel music. He was well-known and loved within the community. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by son, Larry James Smith; siblings, Kathleen Nash and Harold Smith; and grandson, Josh Smith. Surviving Albert is his loving spouse of 73 years, Mary Lou Smith; children, Sandra Edgley and her spouse, Sam Edgley, of Asheville, NC, Stanley Smith of Asheville, NC, and Randy Smith and his spouse, Grady Cooper, of Hendersonville, NC; and grandchildren, Tonya Robinson of Asheville, NC, Jason Howell and his spouse, Miranda Howell, of Odenville, AL, April Shepard and her spouse, Mike Hardwick of Waynesville, NC, Paul Shepard and his spouse, Julie Shepard, of Asheville, NC, Nathan Smith of Asheville, NC, and Leah Hensley of California; and many great grandchildren. Graveside rights will be held Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 2 PM at Fore Cemetery, 319 Gorman Bridge Rd., Asheville, NC 28806 with Rev. Mark Lewis officiating.
