A Hugh Schintzius of Asheville, NC, passed away at home on November 9, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on Flag Day, June 14, 1943 in Buffalo, NY, and grew up there as the sixth child in a family of eleven children of Chester and Barbara Schintzius. He graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1966 before joining the Peace Corps and serving in Sierra Leone, West Africa from 1966-69. He held a master's degree in Physical Education from West Chester University. Schintzius retired with emeritus status after 32 years at Mansfield University, with several years as the Director of Intramural Recreation; he enjoyed the distinction of coaching the winning women volley ball team to 189 victories. He spent nine summers as court coach at the US Olympic Development Volleyball Camp, worked with the World Volleyball Training Center and spent three weeks attending volleyball coaching clinics in China. In 2008, he crisscrossed the country as a community Activist for the Barack Obama Election Campaign. He was deeply involved with the planning and building of the Student Recreation Center at Mansfield University. Schintzius will be remembered by his numerous dear friends, supportive neighbors and family for his humor, empathy and caring for others. He is survived by his siblings: T. Gail Busillo of East Meadow, NY, John Alan Schintzius of Richmond, VA, A. Laurel Dear, (David) Kiln, MS., B. Joyce Stachowiak, (Franklin), R. Maura Cohen, (Frederick), L. Marica Honsberger, (Richard) of the Buffalo area. He was preceded in passing by his siblings: M. Carol Henke, (James), Hull, MA, Joseph Ward Schintzius, ( Terese Marie) Easley, SC, B. Janet Valtin, (Ronald), Buffalo, NY, K. Lynn Dubuisson, (William), Mobile AL. He is also survived by several adoring nieces and nephews who benefited from his story telling of angels and extraterrestrials. He will be remembered for his love of children and his participation in the annual ''TOYS FOR TOTS'' parade in Asheville as he rode his motorcycle with a giant ''Snoopy'' in the second seat.
