Welcome to the memorial page for

Noccalula "Lula" Moon

July 13, 2017

Noccalula (Lula) Moon died July 13 in her home in Asheville, NC at 62. She is survived by her mother Jeanne Weaver and siblings Claudia Smalley, Paul Weaver, Mary Croninger all of Hoover, AL;  Phoebe Stern of Northport, AL; and Julia Bernstein of NYC; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lula was a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College where she was an honors history major, resident advisor for four years, and student intern in the office of US Senator James Allen. After working for IBM, Lula combined her experience as the sole owner/employee of a bicycle repair shop during college with her knowledge of business machines to found her own repair business "Bytes and Types.” Lula earned certifications in ISO 9001, AS 9100, and numerous other offerings from the American Society for Quality; was a member of the Board of Directors for her ASQ chapter; and retired as a Lead Quality Assurance Auditor as well as Certified Quality Engineer. Lula was steadfast in her work for womon's rights, both through groups and her efforts with individual womon. Fluent in Spanish, she enjoyed travel to natural and historic sites both in the US and abroad. Family, friends, and nature gave most meaning to her life. Lula's appreciation of earth's natural beauty led her to engage others in hiking, biking, kayaking, and swimming. Throughout her life Lula's friends marveled at her ability to swim across large bodies of water. Lula was a group leader and one of 1,750 cyclists who rode 4,250 miles cross country in the Bikecentennial 1976. An avid outdoorswoman, Lula hiked the southern half of the Appalachian Trail. She strengthened her love of creative writing in her later years, participating fully in several Womonwrites Conferences; she felt the support of the group so fully she often referred to them as “My Tribe.” The family expresses deep appreciation to Shanti McKinnie for her loving friendship over the years and her extremely devoted care for Lula during her final six months. Thank you for gathering with Lula's family for the Celebration of her Life.
