Kathryn (Kay) (Gammy) Jane Wasson Johnson, age 81, died of on August 8, 2018, at Solace Center hospice in Asheville, NC.
Kay is survived by her 7 children, Karen Weber, Curtis Johnson, Eric Johnson, Terri Raiford, Julie Taglieri, Jenny McCleary and Scott Johnson, her brother Lloyd Wasson and sister Lorna Wasson.
She was the anchor of the family, gaining the name of Gammy from her granddaughter Sarah Johnson. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She most enjoyed her mountain house and the memories she helped make there.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis C. Johnson, M.D.
Kay was born on June 2, in Harpursville, NY.
Kay worked as an emergency room Nurse in Delray Beach, FL, before returning to college to earn a degree in Public Health. Afterwards she served in Public Health in Palm Beach County, FL. Later she moved to Little Switzerland, NC, where she worked alongside her husband in a private surgical practice. Upon retirement she indulged her passion, books. She and Curtis opened the Grassy Mountain Bookshop in Little Switzerland, NC, specializing in out of print and rare books. After years of providing many a traveler with a special recovered memory, they (again) retired, moving to Givens Estates in Asheville, NC. Again, books came calling. She served as the librarian at Givens for more than a decade and helped establish additional libraries at Givens sister properties.
The family would like to thank the Nurses and Staff at Solace Center hospice for their kind and gentle care.
The family will hold a private remembrance of Kay. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you read a book and donate to the library of your choice or to the Humane Society. Nothing would be a more fitting memorial.
