Jonnie Cathey Smith

Jonnie Cathey Smith, 70, Went home to be with the Lord, Friday. June 30th at John F. Keever, JR. Solace Center.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a Graduate of Clyde A. Erwin high school. She was an executive secretary for several businesses in Asheville. Her church memberships include Pole Creek, Sunrise, and Friendship Baptist as she followed her father’s ministry. A lifelong gospel singer, she started at the age of 3 along with her sister Donna as the Cathey Sisters. Later mother joined them and the Cathey Trio sang for 31 years. Later she was a member of the Resurrection Singers for a number of years.
Jonnie was proceeded in death by her parents Rev. J.D. Cathey and Mary Florence Mehaffey Cathey, and infant son Joey Dale Jackson and sister Donna Joy Cathey.
Surviving are sons Mathew, Jayson, William and Christopher Smith of the home and Jayme Jackson (Etiska) of Asheville. Daughter Tina Watkins (Rev. Keith Watkins), sister Anita Hunter (Jeff),Brother Mike Cathey (Crystal), Grandchildren Autumn Rice (Adam), Jackson and Abigal Watkins, Great-granddaughter Eyslee Jay Rice and Nieces Olivia Hunter and Peyton Cathey. Several Aunts and Uncles.
A private service will be held at a later date.
