Horst Beckerwerth, 84, of Asheville passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher. Born on May 5, 1934 in Breman, Germany, he was a son of the late Helmuth Beckerwerth and Hertha Redicker Beckerwerth Chavious. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and retired from the National Climatic Center in Asheville. He had coached youth soccer at the YMCA and attend St. Paul’s U.M.C. In keeping with his family tradition, which was founded by his grandfather, at Christmas time he would make candy houses for his children and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings, Hal Beckerwerth, Permon Chavious, and Maria Eikmeier. Surviving are his spouse of 63 years, Peggy Bean Beckerwerth; daughters, Linda Leslie and her spouse, Mike, of Hendersonville, and Melissa Shealy and her spouse, Gregg, of Fletcher; siblings, Hans Beckerwerth and his spouse, Alice, of Texas, and Charlie Chavious of Alaska; grandchildren, Josh Elliott, Jared Elliott, and Christopher Smith and his spouse, Meranda; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Tyson, and Kamden Elliott. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at St. Paul’s U.M.C., 223 Hillside Street, Asheville, NC 28801 with the family receiving friends an hour prior. Burial will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his honor to your favorite charity.
