Freddy McKinley Haney

Freddy McKinley Haney, 60, of the Greasy Branch Community, passed away March 31 of an unexpected heart condition. He was preceded in death by his father Ken, sister Nikki, and adoptive grandparents Burdell and Fred Haney. A native of Canton, Freddy excelled at mountain skills and was a man of many talents. An avid outdoors man, he spent his happy days hunting, fishing, and bringing joy to people as a multi - instrumentalist Bluegrass singer. Freddy is survived by his wife Jan, siblings Kenny, Anita and Kay Haney, daughter Tonya (Billy) Grooms, grandchildren, Rachael (Bubba) Surrett, Andrea and Jonathan Rathbone, Cody, Kendra, Sarah and Beth Grooms. He is also survived by step-mother Sarah Haney, his Bluegrass protegee, who he loved as a son, Josh Jones, his little mountain girl Audrey Zelenka and many nieces and nephews. Freddy was treasured by our lake community, so we try not to cry because our time together is over, but rejoice because he lived and was ours. Memorial service: Saturday, April 15th at 1:00 pm at Round Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Swain County.
