Bess (Betty) Seay Baker died Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at her residence in Asheville, NC. She was 98 years old.
Born on October 21, 1920 in Franklin, NC, to James Harrison Seay and Mary Etta Raby, Betty was the fourth of their eight children. In the early 1940”s, she married ex-husband Lloyd Dixon, deceased, with whom she had one child, Judy Powell. In 1950, she married ex-husband Mack Baker, deceased, with whom she had her other three children: Michael Baker, Linda Rudisill and David Baker. She is survived by Judy, Michael and Linda. David pre-deceased her in 2011.
In addition, she is survived by one sibling, James Seay of Franklin, NC, as well as extended family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and all their families.
It is beyond the scope of this obituary to adequately look back over her long life. Rather, we will just conclude with this: Betty possessed a great natural goodness of heart, and was a spirited and fiercely independent soul. This was never more evident than in the courage and bravery with which she faced the many physical problems of living to such an advanced age. The term “strong woman” is much used in our time. Betty was the real thing, by example and not just words. She gave her children the great gift of a mother we not only loved, but admired.
Future arrangements for a memorial gathering will be announced.
