On Tuesday, December 5, M.C. (Mary Carol) Edmunds completed her earthly journey following a major heart attack and surgery. She was returned to the arms of the earth in a private burial, and her soul to rejoin her mother; Mary Lydia Edmunds (né Wilkie), and her aunt; Judith Poore (né Wilkie).
M.C. was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Alabama- Birmingham with high honors. She also did extensive graduate work in Education at Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University. She was one of the first teachers of Evergreen Community Charter School over 23 years ago. She had been teaching for over 15 years at Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College, most recently teaching high school equivalency at the Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women, as well as private educational tutoring. M.C. also served as a Senior Tax Specialist at H&R Block for over ten years. She also served as a paralegal for several years to a local Asheville Attorney. M.C. was an ordained minister. She spent her life on a deep spiritual quest striving to better herself and serve her family and community.
There are few hearts as spacious and true as M.C.’s was, and she will be carried forth in the memories and hearts of so many. A writer of essays, stories, and poems, she was also at work on a new musical as well as two novels and screenplays. She will be remembered for her brilliant talents as an educator of over 30 years, a creator, a performer, and for her wicked sense of humor. M.C. held fierce loyalty to her friends and students. For so many she was a steady ship of conviction and a bright star we depended upon to shine for us no matter the rough seas of our lives. A beacon of creativity, she inspired and empowered so many people in multiple communities and was an extremely compassionate and generous human.
Above all, she was devoted to her partner, just short of nineteen years, Jenna Jaffe (Melissas), the three sons they raised together; Julien, Avalon, and Camelot Melissas- their grandson Oscar, and their godson, Elian Ogiste. She is also survived by her father William Oscar Edmunds III of Greenville, South Carolina, brother David Edmunds and family of Salt Lake City, Utah, cousins Matthew and Charles Poore, and their families respectively, and M.C.’s six cats. Her family was forever her North Star.
While everyone who knew her regrets that we didn’t get to spend more time with her, she lives on in all the minds she broadened and in the way she made us feel, which was loved.
M.C.’s Life Celebration is Sunday, April 14, 2024, from 2 PM to 6 PM at Evergreen Community Charter School, at 50 Bell Road, Asheville, NC 28805.
